Darren Rowse is known world-wide as "Problogger". He is the Yoda Jedi Master of blogging and social media.
Darren is also a Christian, and he lives also in the same city as I do. Double the coolness.
In this video, Darren gives his wisdom and insight on how churches should use social media and how they should strategically think about their online presence. If you don't have time to watch the video scroll down below it and I've written what I think are his most salient points.
For the rest of you. Get a pen. Get ready to type. It is brilliant advice from this Blogging, Social Media Jedi Master.
There are people who more at home online because of disability, shyness, distance. These people and others are using the web to belong and relate find community share life together.
Incredible opportunities for churches in two areas:
Internally – To build up the body of Christ through social media.
The church is missing out if we are only using social media to build ourselves up.
Externally – We are called to mission and the web is a wonderful opportunity for this. If people are going online to find community, belonging and relationships it makes sense that the church is there positioned in those places where people are going. We are in the business of community.
How do we engage in this space?
1) Move ‘beyond the build it and they will come’ mentality. It’s no longer about building a website and expecting people to come. The web now is about us going to them and building relationships on their own turf.2) Build what we do on the solid foundation of listening, interacting. Not broadcasting. Listen to their online culture. We are at our best we don’t broadcast, but interact.
We will be much more effective and influential when we communicate on a basis of listening.

Steve, thanks for posting this. Darren gives some great advice to the church. I'm not sure if I learned anything new from the video, but the fact that it comes from Darren, who is highly respected outside of Christian circles for his Internet wisdom, gives added weight to these ideas.
